Asha Parek began her journey in movies when she was just 8 years old. He was the filmmaker Bimal Roy who scouted her, earning her two film wins as a child artist. Many years later, when she was to make her adult debut, little did she know that her acting abilities would first be misjudged and then totally ignored. The veteran actress, the OG queen of the box office, was present at the 53rd International Indian Film Festival (IFFI) 2022 in Goa where she shared her beautiful journey in the industry.
Asha Parekh worked with the biggest stars of her time, and she spoke about her experience working with each of them. But before that, here is an interesting chapter of his professional career that made the hottest chronicles in the gossip magazines of the time. It was about her never having played with Dilip Kumar. Speaking of the same, Asha ji said, “The press wrote that I didn’t like him, so I didn’t work with him. However, this was far from the truth”.
Revealing more about the reality behind this gossip, Asha ji revealed that it was her dream to work with the Dilip Kumar. “I’ve always been in awe of him and I’ve always wanted to work with him. In fact, I also signed a film with him called Zabardast but unfortunately it was put aside. I didn’t unlucky,” she shared.
Speaking of Dev Anand, with whom she gave memorable films like Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai, Aankhon Aankhon Mein and Mahal, Asha Parekh said, “Dev Anand was in his own world. Nobody knew how he prepared and what and how he was going to do a scene. So he was used to his thing, and I had to react.
Another actor with whom she gave hits is Shammi Kapoor. They romanced each other in movies like Teesri Manzil, Pagla Kahin Ka, Dil Deke Dekho. However, the link they shared off-screen will shock many. Asha ji was 16 when she first performed with Shammi. And his first wife Geeta Bali loved him very much. “She used to pick me up and walk around and say Shammi ji, isko hum adopt kar lete hain.” It was a warm bond and I called them chacha and chachi,” Parekh revealed. She shares a similar bond with the late Shammi Kapoor’s second wife, Neila Devi, whom she now calls chachi and is in regular contact with.
Talking about Rajesh Khanna, whom she shared the screen with in movies like Kati Patang, Aan Milo Sajna, Baharon Ke Sapne, Asha ji revealed that she shares a good bond with him, and he is a flamboyant actor and easy going.
Manoj Kumar is one co-star with whom she shared a heated argument, but who turned things around for her. Both starred in Do Badan. It was a film that made people see beyond the glam girl. Sharing an anecdote from the sets, Asha ji shared, “I talked to director Raj Khosla that the two characters cannot die at the end.” I was sick in the movie and could die, but just walking in and dropping dead was unconvincing to Manoj. He agreed to change the ending, but Manoj was furious with me. ‘
They had a heated debate about it, then came to the mutual conclusion that okay, both characters will die and the movie was a huge hit. She became a HIT girl. It was a known thing in the industry that you could sell a movie on the name of Asha Parekh and she was the one calling the shots, the only heroine perhaps who had the power to choose her co- star.
Asha ji has continued to wear many hats over the years, doing what she believed in, engaging in endeavors that were close to her heart and satisfying. We hope her journey inspires the next generation of actresses who aim to conquer the world.
