Jury calls Vivek Agnihotri's director The Kashmir Files a 'vulgar propaganda film' [Watch]

The 53rd International Indian Film Festival closed its curtains on Monday with a controversial statement made by the head of the jury and Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid had no hesitation in calling director Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files propaganda and a vulgar film. In his speech, Nadav said that all of the jury members found The Kashmir Files inappropriate for the competition at the prestigious festival. He openly shared their feelings on stage, calling the film propaganda and vulgar, since the festival is also a stage for critical discussions. “We were all disturbed and shocked by the 15th film: The Kashmir Files. It felt like propaganda, a vulgar film, inappropriate for a competitive artistic section of such a prestigious film festival. comfortable to openly share those feelings here with you on stage. Since the spirit of having a festival is to also accept critical discussion which is essential for art and for life,” Nadav said in his speech. During the early days of the festival, Anupam Kher said The Kashmir Files was not just a film for him, but an emotion he portrayed on screen. He also added that Vivek Agnihotri’s film made people around the world aware of the tragedy that befell the Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley in the 1990s.

The film, released on March 11, 2022, stars Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumaar and Mithun Chakraborty. It’s just one of the few films to bring huge box office returns for its creators in the post-pandemic era.
