Kantara, a Kannada film that unexpectedly stormed the global box office and its star Rishab Shetty have become the talk of the town. To give you an overview, the film broke the Rs 400 crore mark at the global box office, becoming the only Kannada film to enter the 400 crore club globally after another Kannada KGF Chapter 2 success with Yash.
But how did Rishab do this? Is there a recipe for success? Is there a mantra that other filmmakers, aiming to achieve some of Pan India’s biggest box office hits, can consider? The Kantara star revealed all during the 53rd International Indian Film Festival (IFFI) 2022 in Goa.
In an in-house masterclass on “Representing Cultural Diversity and Identifying New Markets,” hosted by veteran film producer TG Thyagarajan at IFFI, Rishab Shetty spoke about the fundamental aspect that made his film so accessible to an audience transcending any demographic or linguistic barriers.
Talking about how Kantara was categorized, Rishab Shetty shared that he used all the different elements that personally inspired him. From his experience and observations watching Tamil cinema and the finer nuances of the cultures gave Kantara the shape fluid enough to penetrate the hearts of the variety of audiences who watched the film.
Giving another reason for what he thinks made the film such a big hit, Shetty said, “Thanks to OTT, people are now watching movies from all over the world, from all over the country.” He added that OTT has brought about the much-needed revolution where audiences are no longer limited to the language they are native to or know.
The success of Kantara is truly encouraging for filmmakers who are creating regional cinema with a global vocation. Interestingly, while Rishab Shetty is all excited about the opportunities now available in film, he has decided to work only in the Kannada film industry as it is his Karma Bhoomi. However, he’s all for dubbing the film into as many languages as possible if it’s a hit and deserves a wider audience. We really hope to see more such projects in the future, which will blur the line between the different “woods” where movies come from and truly define what the Indian film industry stands for.
