Ichadhari naagin toh sunna hoga but yeh ichadhari Bhediya kya hai? Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon, Deepak Dobriyal, Abhishek Banerjee starring Bhediya is your answer. Bollywood has strived to create something substantial, to go beyond borders and to rise to the level of other industries. Bhediya is an attempt to meet audience expectations for thrills and dramas that have gone missing. Directed by Amar Kaushik, Bhediya is the third installment in Dinesh Vijan’s horror comedy series which began with Stree. The second was Roohi with Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao. Unlike the first two, however, Bhediya cannot be called a horror movie. It’s more of a creature movie with Bollywood’s tadka. Is Bhediya worth watching? Scroll to find out.

What is it about?

Bhediya revolves around an entrepreneur named Bhaskar who is quite ambitious in life. Harriparti (money) is all he thinks about and he will do anything to make money. He got a contract to take charge of a road to be built inside a forest. He travels to the beautiful place of Itanagar, capital of Arunachal Pradesh, where he is to enlist the locals and tribes to cooperate in the construction of the road. The trees must be cut down, the jungle must be dissolved, the wildlife must be hampered for its ambition. His cousin JD and a friend Jomin give him company on this mission. He did not know that Prakriti (nature) has its own way of creating balance in the world.

What’s hot?

Bhediya is a perfect blend of comedy and drama. Varun Dhawan made an honest effort to experiment and try something new while keeping his comedic timing intact. He managed to feel it well and deliver it to the screen. The film’s writers did a terrific job with the one-liners and punchlines. There are times when you will roll around on the floor laughing. References to trending phrases like Shehnaaz Gill’s – “Meri koi feeling nahi hai kya, toh kya karun mein, marjaun?” are finely integrated. A wolf responding to Himesh Reshammiya’s Tera Suroor while boxing on a full moon night is definitely hilarious. Kriti Sanon plays the role of a veterinarian who adds the charm and elegance the film deserves. Abhishek Bannerjee is the heart of the film. His comedic timing and acting skills make Bhediya a fun and entertaining film. It captivates the screen like no other. There are quite a few elements in the film that deserve attention. First of all, the scenic beauty of Arunachal Pradesh is thrilling. As the movie is in 3D, you get all the feelings of being in the middle of serene nature. Sometimes you feel like you’re in BBC Earth with close-ups of wild creatures and it’s beautiful. The film’s VFX is commendable. Varun Dhawan’s transition from a human to a wolf is tastefully done. Above all, keeping comedy and drama aside, Bhediya delivers strong social messages in the most subtle way possible that hits the right nerve. As it is shot in Arunachal Pradesh, the directors have tried to keep the idiosyncrasies of the state, its culture and more intact by opting for secondary characters who belong to it and watch their role. There’s a surprise two-star cameo at the end that will literally have you jumping out of your sets. We won’t reveal names to avoid spoilers.

What is not?

The first half of the film progresses at a slow pace and it appears a bit drawn out in a few scenes. However, in the second half, the drama resumes and it is then pure entertainment. I wish there were more scenes for Kriti Sanon to show off her talent as the actress has shown significant progress in her acting chart since her debut movie. But she leaves a mark even though she has less screen time. The ending, although unexpected, is quite predictable. The songs didn’t do the movie justice and the background music kind of reminded me of Stranger Things.

Verdict

Bhediya is a one-time-watch movie, but only if you watch it in 3D. BollywoodLife awards Bhediya 3 stars.
